How Does Stump Grinding Work?

Since stumps are strongly rooted into the ground, Majestic Tree Service uses a stump grinder to get rid of them. As the name implies, this is a machine specially built to grind up stumps and make sure they’re completely gone.

The stump grinder will remove the stump completely, down below ground level. It uses a rotating blade with large, sharp teeth to turn the stump into mulch, which deteriorates much faster than an intact stump.

Mulch also provides the soil with extra nutrients as it breaks down. Stumps will eventually break down on their own, but this can take years; when you need a stump removed promptly, hiring a professional to take care of it is always a good idea.

Here are some ways we take the stress out of stump grinding for you:

• We’ll coordinate with the utility companies: When you decide to move forward, we’ll reach out to utility companies to make sure they mark their lines underground (if any) to ensure we don’t damage those lines. We coordinate when they come out and handle all of the back-and-forth. Our goal is to make the process as simple as possible for you.
• Accessing the stump: For the backyard, we always need to make sure that there are no steps or stairs. Our stump grinding machine is large and needs about 36” of clearance or more on a flat surface. 36” is the standard gate size.
• Backfilling the hole: If possible, we try to leave enough backfill so that if you want to plant right away, there isn’t a gaping hole. Let us know what your plans are with the space and we’ll do our best to accommodate you.
